Heat and Serve Dinners for Seniors and Veterans in the Town of Pelham
The idea of making Heat and Serve Dinners for seniors and veterans in Pelham who are in need came from our Branch President, Toni McKelvie. Given that normal operations of the Legion were suspended because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it made sense to utilize our existing inventory of goods and frozen products to prepare these heat and serve dinners.
A small group of volunteers agreed to assist in this endeavour and as of April 6, 2020, almost 850 meals have been distributed throughout our Town of Pelham. The first production and roll out of these meals began on March 17th . There is no charge for these meals.
This initiative will continue as long as possible and is subject to volunteer availability, product to produce and package these meals and the ability to keep our kitchen operational.
Individuals, businesses and organizations have stepped forward and have made financial donations that allow us to purchase the required goods and products to produce these meals. As such, you can say that it is really a community effort and something that really isn’t that surprising. Time and time again we have seen our citizens, service clubs, businesses and town officials pull together to meet various challenges. This is just the latest example.
If you wish to make a financial donation, you can contact Toni by emailing her at firstname.lastname@example.org or by leaving a message on the Legion answering machine at 905-892-6293. She will get back to you and advise how you can make your contribution.
You can be assured we will do our best to continue to serve our seniors and veterans n need in our Town of Pelham during this COVID-19 pandemic. For those seniors and veterans in need of assistance, you can contact us by using the information already provided.
Generally speaking, we deliver meals on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays of each week and we hope that through this initiative we can bring a little joy and relief to those seniors and veterans who are facing uncertainty and challenges as we navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic.
President Toni and her volunteers are also producing an Easter dinner consisting of ham, scalloped potatoes and vegetables for our seniors and veterans in need. Meals will be delivered on April 11th . Again, seniors and veterans in need in our Town can contact us via the information already provided to order one of these meals and again free of charge. An additional contact person for ordering meals is Peggy Palmer. She can be reached at 905-735-0229.
While providing assistance and honouring our Veterans are two of our principle responsibilities as Legion members of Branch 613, we are also mindful that we are part of a great community and we want to do our fair share in providing assistance to others during this time.
